Reimagining Waste at Its Origin
How a Data Scientist turned a messy daily chore into an elegant smart kitchen habit.
The Thesis that Sparked a Startup
Anu Khandelwal spent years working as a Data Scientist at Twilio and other tech companies. Her path shifted during her Master's studies in the UK, where her thesis examined the garbage infrastructure in North Delhi.
Her research exposed a core flaw: modern waste management is focused on "waste displacement"—the collection and transport of garbage from one neighborhood to landfills—rather than actual resource processing.
When the 2021 lockdowns hit Bengaluru, municipal wet waste collection collapsed. Bags of leftovers sat rotting on balconies, causing foul odors and fruit flies. Anu realized that waiting for centralized systems to fix waste is futile. Composting had to be decentralized, clean, and processed at source: inside our kitchens.
“If we can make throwing scraps in a composter as satisfying and convenient as throwing them in a bin, we solve 60% of municipal landfill growth.”

The Journey
Years of iteration — seven prototypes turning a messy daily chore into an elegant, home-ready habit.

The Refined Sketch
The industrial-design render, closest to the final Rawbin.

The first working build
Pure proof of concept — bulky and exposed, but it worked.

A body takes shape
The twin-chamber body was formed, tucking wires into the base.

Refining the internals
Proportions were reworked to make the composting cycle reliable.

Taller, slimmer, smarter
The silhouette changed completely, resembling a home appliance.

Fully enclosed
A finished outer shell hid the internal machinery completely.

Starting to feel real
A sleek matte body with a proper lid—looking calm and considered.

Almost there
Branded, minimal, and home-ready. The closest build yet.

Rawbin, realized
Years of prototypes distilled into one simple object for your home.

From Zero to One
Turning that simple idea into a real product took two years of R&D, seven major prototypes, countless experiments, hundreds of failures, and more sleepless nights than we can count.
We are deeply grateful to Techshlok, Ayush, and the entire team who took on the challenge of building something they had never built before and kept rebuilding it until we got closer to our goal: making composting as effortless as throwing waste into a bin.
Dealing with the unpredictable reality of food waste, from excess moisture and odour to fruit flies, stalled motors, airflow challenges, and microbial systems that refused to behave as expected - every failed prototype taught us something. Every difficult food-waste experiment pushed us forward. Rawbin exists today because this team kept showing up, solving, testing, breaking, and building again. From zero to one, this journey would not have been possible without them.
One to Thousands
Taking Rawbin from one working product to thousands requires an ecosystem of people who bring different skills, perspectives, and expertise to the table.
Agrahan Engineers
Our Manufacturing PartnerTurning a working prototype into a product that can be manufactured at scale is a different challenge altogether. Agrahan Engineers is helping us make that transition—from engineering iterations and prototypes to reliable, repeatable manufacturing. Their experience in precision thermoforming and industrial production is helping us build Rawbin for the thousands of homes and businesses we hope to reach.
Studio Urli
Social Media & CommunicationsA product can solve a problem, but a movement needs a story. Studio Urli is helping us tell the Rawbin story, make composting more relatable, and build a community around the idea that food waste can become a resource. Together, we are working to make sustainability more engaging, accessible, and part of everyday conversations.
FusionEmbedded
Electronics & PCB DesignRawbin is a physical product powered by technology. FusionEmbedded is helping us translate our electronics and sensing requirements into robust PCB designs that can support Rawbin as it evolves from a prototype into a scalable connected product.
Ripe Life Sciences
Microbial Technology PartnerThe right microbial environment is at the heart of Rawbin. Ripe Life Sciences is helping us develop and produce the specialised biological formulation that supports the composting process inside Rawbin. Together, we are working to create a consistent, effective microbial environment that helps transform everyday food waste into compost.
And then there are the young engineers, designers, developers, and creators who bring something equally important: fresh eyes.
A growing group of young Gen Z minds is contributing to Rawbin across technology, design, electronics, content, and innovation. They question assumptions, experiment fearlessly, and bring ideas we may not have thought of ourselves.
Some are helping us build the technology. Some are rethinking the design. Some are shaping how the world will experience Rawbin. From one product to thousands, Rawbin is becoming a collective effort.
Preparing for launch
Rawbin is now preparing for its first major production run, moving from hundreds of prototypes to homes across India. Every lesson from years of building is baked into the version shipping next.
